HOW IT BEGAN
Our Story
Wotton Tarpaving Ltd was founded in 1960 by surfacing and groundworks expert Jack Giles. Initially based in Wotton Under Edge, our company was named for the thriving market town on the Cotswolds Way in south Gloucestershire that Jack called home.
More than 65 years later we’ve moved a little closer to Bristol to the picturesque medieval town of Chipping Sodbury, but we still cover the same area – Bristol, Bath, Chippenham, Cheltenham, Cirencester and surrounds – with our renowned surfacing work for homeowners and commercial properties.
Our family business is now in the capable hands of our current director, Paul Giles – the third in the line of succession behind founder Jack and his son Alec.
We’re extremely proud that our company has stood the test of time, and believe it is our commitment to quality workmanship and top notch customer service that will keep our business flourishing for generations yet to come.

We’ve been around installing paving, tarmac and patios and undertaking groundworks for long enough for customers to know that we are reliable and reputable. We never leave a site until the client is 100% satisfied with our work, and if something goes wrong down the line, we’re always there to put it right.
We offer our customers a five-year guarantee on our workmanship, which shows how confident we are in our competence and ability.
That’s probably why we never have to tout for work. Most of our commissions come to us through word-of-mouth recommendation or returning customers.
Something else that our clients appreciate is the fact that we don’t work with sub-contractors. Throughout your surfacing or groundworks project you’ll see only our own experienced staff on site, so you’ll get to know us from first meeting and briefing through to the final tidy up.
We leave our sites pristine and ready for use, whether it’s a block-paved patio, tarmac driveway, stone-paved path, dropped kerb or heavy groundworks and excavations for a landscaping or build project.
OUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Green & Compliant
As surfacing and groundworks contractors we are fully cognisant of the need to minimise the impact that our work has on the environment.
Our surfacing crew are experts at planning drainage so as to avoid water pooling or undermining surfaces, in compliance with local planning recommendations.
We are meticulous when it comes to levelling and properly preparing a site for paving or tarmacking. We use environmentally recycled materials like crushed concrete as a hardcore sub-base, and compact base material to HAUC (Highway Authorities & Utilities) specifications.
We have a Waste Carriers Licence issued by the Environment Agency and responsibly remove any excavated material from a site for recycling or safe disposal.
